All hail to the victorious Maoist

"Vanity made the revolution, liberty was only a pretext."

The sapient protagonists of democracy in Nepal have expressed their disillusionment at the Maoist win in the polls, by saying they are "surprised" by it.

"Surprised" is probably the understatement of the decade.

I'm just "surprised" that Prachanda is not currently facing prosecutions at the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity, and for other atrocities against his own people.

The ardent protagonists understood the virtues of democracy and incessantly chanted about it until reverberations were felt down the corridors of the Royal palace. But they miserably failed to understand politics. They were too caught up enlightening others on the Internet and newspapers, they didn't realise, the Maoist were insidiously gaining crucial votes from disenchanted Nepalis, who "surprise, surprise!!" had heard the democracy mantra all too many times before.

Now the proponents of democracy are coming to terms with the fact that, it was them all along, who were aiding and abetting the blood-drenched Maoists in their struggle to consolidate power. Now the Nepali people have legitimised the Maoist and the best some folks can say is "they are surprised".

But Kudos to the Maoist where its due.

The Maoist accepted nothing and questioned everything.
---
They repudiated the 1992 Nepali constitution, as it just wasn't relevant, modern or cutting edge for them.

Ironically, the Maoists have adopted the 2nd Amendment from the 200 year old American constitution especially "the right to bear arms" and keep "a well regulated militia."
---

They want to abolish the 240-year-old monarchy and luck has been on their side too.

The heir to the throne, Prince Dipendra conveniently gunned down his whole family and himself. Family dinner will never be the same again in the Shah household while next door, Prachanda sat down for dinner with is family and gleefully announced, "I just won the lottery!!" Only conspiracy theorists truly know the odds Prachanda overcame.
---

In the great battle between the "British Empire vs. The Gorkhas", we were victorious.

Now in this truly Nepali Civil war, "The Gorkhas (Maoists) vs. The Gorkhas (Status Quo)", we are all losers but history will written by the triumphant Maoists.
---

They Maoists showed their human side by being magnanimous in victory.
They gave us Peace.. by halting the war they started.
---

The decade long Nepali Civil War ended with 10s of thousands of Nepaliz hacked to death, blown to pieces and shot down in a blaze of gory. Extortions, violence, intimidations and pressure cookers were all fair game to them.

The unforgiving Nepali people like to remind these Maoists leaders of their bloody past by presenting them with wreaths and throwing "rato abhir" at them.
---

King Gyanendra did no favours for himself. It was career suicide when he published this very unflattering picture of himself. When he took absolute power, he explained his reasons in the 'formal Royal dialect', which was incomprehensible to most Nepaliz.

Gyanendra should have known, keeping up the Royal protocols is one thing, but not having a good speechwriter and well-oiled PR machine to enhance his image, will have disastrous consequences.
---

Our omniscient journalist picked up the smell of the beleaguered king and they vilified him, as he became the perfect scapegoat for all the woes Nepal was facing.

With smug faces, the Maoists showed their approval to the journalists by writing, "We like you, we like your family too, hope you and your family live long and prosper."
---

Like the Terminator, the Maoists have been unstoppable. Nothing it seemed would stand on their way to in their quest for the ultimate aphrodisiac: POWER.

I can almost hear Prachanda singing "I did it my way". Eat your heart out, Mr Frank Sinatra !!

My celebration at their victory in the polls

    Can it be anymore painful?

Maoists have promised Nepali people a better economy, a better country.

They have also said that they would fight caste-based discrimination, repeat they would fight caste-based discrimination, no elimination promised here. I was thinking the cast system is mostly in Nepali people's mind, and was wondering if there is any kind of law we (they) can put together to erase that mentality like it never existed ??

Being a 100% Nepali woman, I was thinking if they have said anything about gender discrimination. I hope not. It is my fight and I don¡¦t need them to butt in. But even in the case of severe gender discrimination, I never felt like I needed to go kill all the men, or cause minor injuries by throwing rocks or chappals at them. I just want to make one thing crystal clear here, I am not a man-hater... uh... sorry... just got a little distracted here...

I was saying, Maoists have promised Nepali people a better economy, hence, a better country. Still, yet to be more concise on what they mean by better country.

Ever since the democracy landed in Nepal (did it ever??), people who fought for it like to justify the consequences by saying that it takes time to bring change. Today, the pro-Maoists are saying the same thing... "give them time". There is no justification whatsoever for what they did. I like to believe that people voted for them out of fear, and cheating was involved and all that. But besides all that fact, there are quite a number of people, who are strong and passionate Maobadi followers. No, I am not talking about the gullible, uneducated, villagers sunk in poverty but well-educated, well-traveled, city living well-known friends. Are these people all brain washed or am I missing something? This is the rare time when I feel... Boy, I wish I was wrong... but how can we hope for a peace, justice and human rights from the approach where there is no such thing as compassion to begin with? It is really painful to see competent people being side-tracked.

Nepali janta have been lied to and cheated on, again and again from different politicians. I don't think any of us want to witness any of it anymore. Are Nepali people hoping for a better Nepal by electing Maoists? What are the expectations from the Maobadis? Or did the Nepali people simply want a temporary relief from Maoists? If so, this quick fix is going to cost all of us. It is really painful to see Nepali people going through hell.

On the positive side, they did give some solid materials to the comedians for their acts and the bloggers for their blogs.

Does "the right to bear arms" explain what kind of Gun? I think they went ahead than Americans, as Americans were debating about hand guns while they fired Ak47 :)

Now as I ponder about it, the "surprised" factor is the same that had stung Gyanendra before, and now it has stung major parties too. I'm not supporting Maoist, but gone are the days when one runs a political campaign reading a newspaper. Staying all the time in Kathmandu and showing up one month prior to poll no longer work.

But I'm not taking anything away from Maoist Rambo's, they must have done their part too :)

    100% Nepali Woman,

    CASTE ??

Only recently, I realised there are two distinct groups.. people who fall under "caste" and people who fall under the "ethnic" groups... I think all(most) people put these groups together and things have got a lot more complicated...

If people say, we are of the "ethnic" groups and have nothing to do with caste.. and people with "caste" forgets about the ethnic groups.. life would be much more simple...

    =======
Ethnic: relating to a sizable group of people sharing a common and distinctive racial, national, religious, linguistic, or cultural heritage.

caste: Any of the hereditary, endogamous social classes or subclasses of traditional Hindu society, stratified according to Hindu ritual purity, especially the Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaisya, and Sudra castes.
    =======

    GENDER ??

In India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka where women are "allegedly" treated badly have given woman, the highest authority in power ie the post of PM, while USA is still pondering about it...

I think the respect issue, "the way its shown" to women by men varies geographically.. If the respect factor to woman can be fused/shared.. the best bits (a bit from east, and a bit from the west).. I'm sure women would have a splendid time from men.. :)

    NEPAL

We should have meritocracy and not just democracy... If thugs and dakaz can be forgiven overnight for their crimes and given the chance to rule Nepal.. there is no way we will move forward..

There should be more scrutiny, more transparency, more accountability.. etc etc.. Only after Nepaliz learn to act, talk and walk ... cleaner than clean... follow the laws ..and understand it ... respect it... Nepal will be a better place..

I totally agree with your opinion on what it actually takes for Nepal to be a better place. Bottom line, I think you are hoping for an absolute decency from Nepali people which is hard to achieve because most of the people in Nepal are living in an abject poverty. There is less opportunity, so people are willing to do whatever to obtain it. That's when the corruption starts. The whole supply-demand thing. People who haven't had much opportunity to advance themselves are blaming entirely on caste discrimation. As a result, people are now emphasizing more on electing someone from their own cast/ethnic group. With this approach, I don't think we will be shooting for meritocracy. It is a good thought though.
    Ho-Ho-Ho !
I don't think USA is pondering about should we elect a woman President but more like should we elect Hilary Clinton. I don't think people's doubts about her are based on her gender but her lack of abiltiy to show sincerity. Even, I, a democrat, a feminist (sexual orientation: straight.... just needed to clarify, people have the tendency to think all feminists are lesbians.. :) ) have my doubts...about her. It is just that the next president of US should be someone who has the strong ability and interest on cleaning all the mess Bush left. But I do have more faith on Hilary then the other two. It might be like electing Bill again. We need an economy repair here in the US very badly.
