Nation in Focus: Photojournalist Keshab Raj Thoker Connects the Nepali-American Diaspora

Exclusive: KATHMANDU / NEW YORK — In a world increasingly shaped by fleeting visual narratives, few photographers carry both the weight of history and the warmth of human connection quite like Keshab Raj Thoker. A Kathmandu-based photojournalist whose career spans more than fifteen years, Thoker has risen to become one of South Asia’s most distinguished visual storytellers. Today, his extraordinary body of work is drawing intense appreciation from the Nepali-American diaspora and U.S. media circles, redefining how Nepal’s story is told to the wider world.

Mr. Thoker's photographs do not simply capture moments; they preserve memory, bear witness to crisis, and honor the dignity of individuals whose lives rarely make international headlines. For the hundreds of thousands of Nepali-Americans living across the United States, this deeply human approach to visual journalism carries a profound personal resonance.

A Nepali Voice Recognized in America

Perhaps no single milestone speaks more powerfully to Thoker’s global standing than his recognition by the University of Missouri School of Journalism, home to one of the most prestigious journalism programs in the world.

At the 71st Missouri Photo Workshop in 2019, Thoker was awarded the Spirit of the Workshop Award. Far from a mere nod to technical skill, this distinction is reserved strictly for the visual storyteller who most fully embodies the ethical commitment, human empathy, and artistic vision of documentary journalism.

Coupled with the Jack and Dorothy Scholarship—a further affirmation from Missouri’s faculty—Thoker cemented his place among the most exceptional participants in the workshop's historic legacy, which dates back to 1949.

Competing and collaborating alongside the world’s finest visual journalists, Thoker’s recognition signaled his arrival at the very highest echelons of the craft, commanding deep professional respect within American media institutions.

A Masterclass in International Excellence

Mr. Thoker's acclaim in the United States is part of a sustained, decades-long pattern of international distinction.

In 2023, he took home the Silver Award in the Women’s Rights Category at the Asian Press Photo Contest in Singapore—the region's most competitive photojournalism forum, drawing thousands of professional entries from across Asia and the Pacific. Far from resting on past achievements, Thoker proved his ongoing relevance that very same year when the Press Council of Nepal bestowed upon him its Photojournalism Award, the highest national honor a visual journalist can receive in his homeland.

His decorated portfolio spans over fifteen years of continuous excellence, including:

-The Grand Prize at Wildlife Conservation Nepal’s Nature Through the Lens Competition (2009)

-The ICIMOD People’s Choice Award

-Multiple Mega Bank Photo Competition Awards

-The National Excellence Photojournalist Award from the Nepal Tamang National Federation

Documenting History on the Frontlines

When the COVID-19 pandemic paralyzed the globe in 2020, Thoker did what great journalists do: he walked straight into the empty streets.

The resulting masterpiece, Life in the Pandemic: Kathmandu During COVID-19 (published by Mhendo Trust, Nepal), became the country's first comprehensive photographic book documenting the crisis. While the world watched in isolation, Thoker captured a defining historical era.

For the Nepali-American community watching anxiously from thousands of miles away, his images provided an invaluable, visceral connection to home.

Today, the book stands as an enduring historical text of national and international significance, serving as a vital record for historians, public health researchers, and policymakers alike.

Thoker’s authoritative eye has also been immortalized in two official national publications: Filming in Nepal (Film Board Nepal, 2020) and The Rising from the Ruins (National Reconstruction Authority, Nepal, 2019), cementing his work as the definitive visual record of Nepal's most critical modern turning points.

A Decade of Institutional Leadership

Beyond the viewfinder, Thoker has spent more than a decade shaping the industry itself. He rose steadily through the leadership ranks of the Photojournalist Club Nepal—the country's premier professional organization for visual journalists—serving as an Executive Member (2012–2015), Secretary (2015–2018), Vice President (2018–2020), and ultimately Acting President (2021).

His peers further honored him as an Honorary Member of the organization, a title reserved exclusively for those who have made revolutionary contributions to the profession. Concurrently, he guided the industry as a National Council Member of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists from 2021 to 2024.

Because of this immense industry authority, Thoker remains a highly sought-after voice in evaluating talent. He served as a jury member for the #PhotoNepal Photo Exhibition for four consecutive years (2016–2020) and most recently anchored the jury panel at the Nepalgunj Photo Festival in 2025.

Validated by Global Institutions

From the perspective of international media and governance, Thoker’s professional reliability is unmatched. For nearly a decade (2015–2024), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) trusted him as a photography consultant to document its critical programs and humanitarian initiatives throughout Nepal.

His elite institutional portfolio features a roster of globally recognized organizations, including:

-Save the Children

-The International -Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

-Room to Read

-Maiti Nepal

-The Tenure Facility (Sweden)

Most recently, Thoker stepped into the highest corridors of governance, serving as the Personal Officer – Photojournalist to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister of Nepal (2024–2025), entrusted with curating the official photographic record of the nation's executive leadership.

Fine Art with a Human Pulse

Mr. Thoker’s journalism seamlessly doubles as fine art. His work has graced the walls of the nation's premier creative spaces, most notably the Nepal Art Council in Kathmandu.

His solo exhibition, Nepal After Earthquake (Nepal Art Council, 2017), put his singular artistic and documentary vision on full display, capturing the raw resilience of a nation rebuilding itself. He has similarly elevated major group exhibitions, including Promoting Dolakha with the Nepal Tourism Board (2023) and the 50 Years of ADB-Nepal Energy Collaboration retrospective (2025).

A Bridge Across Oceans

The vibrant, growing Nepali-American community deserves access to storytelling of the absolute highest caliber. Thoker’s internationally validated expertise—spanning earthquake reconstruction, pandemic frontiers, environmental shifts, and human rights struggles—represents exactly the type of profound journalistic talent that enriches both mainstream American media and diaspora identity.

While his photographs speak universally to the human condition, they offer something uniquely sacred to Nepali-Americans: a brilliant bridge across oceans, a striking reminder of their roots, and an ongoing testament to the beautiful, complex stories still unfolding in the homeland they carry in their hearts.

Mr. Keshab Raj Thoker has spent over fifteen years documenting history with unwavering integrity, courage, and artistry. In doing so, he has connected the world to Nepal—one unforgettable frame at a time.
