The First Historic Journey of Nepal–India Development Diplomacy

Exclusive — The five-day visit to India by Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane is believed to mark the first enduring step in Nepal–India development diplomacy. The high-level talks held between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSP Chairman and former Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal Rabi Lamichhane are expected to elevate Nepal's development diplomacy to new heights.

Nepal and India share not only deep civilisational bonds of roti-beti (food and marriage ties) but also open borders; Nepal's five thousand rivers and streams flow through India, and the two nations sleep side by side. Yet this visit has sent a clear message: Nepal and India will henceforth move forward as colleagues, fellow travellers, and partners in shared values.

Lamichhane–Modi Meeting

Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held crucial talks in New Delhi. The meeting, attended by RSP Co-General Secretary Bipin Kumar Acharya, Secretariat Member Deepak Bohra, Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, featured wide-ranging discussions on a forward-looking vision to lift Nepal–India relations beyond past limitations and usher in a new era of development diplomacy. RSP reaffirmed its full readiness and commitment to translating the shared prosperity, mutual trust, cooperation, and potential of both nations' peoples into concrete achievements.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said:

"Delighted to meet the Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party of Nepal Mr. Rabi Lamichhane. I welcome and fully share his desire to work closely together for a shared and prosperous future. Nepal is a priority partner under our Neighbourhood First policy and we look forward to collaborating with the new government to elevate the special and multifaceted relationship between our two countries to greater heights."

RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane said:

"It was indeed a great delight to engage in such a productive hour-long conversation with Hon. PM Shree Narendra Modi ji today. I share your vision for a future where Nepal and India transcend past constraints to embrace a new era of development diplomacy. By focusing on shared civilizational bonds, digital corridors, and seamless connectivity, we can truly build a partnership defined by progress and mutual trust. RSP looks forward to translating these possibilities into reality for people of Nepal and India — for our shared prosperity."

Meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah

The high-level RSP delegation led by Chairman Rabi Lamichhane, including Co-General Secretary Bipin Kumar Acharya and Secretariat Member Deepak Bohra, also held political talks with Indian Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. The discussions were serious and result-oriented, focusing on enhancing cross-border connectivity, rooting out transboundary crime, and strengthening joint mechanisms for disaster management.

Meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar

The RSP delegation also met Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in New Delhi. The talks were cordial and fruitful, centring on deepening the centuries-old historical and people-to-people ties between Nepal and India, resolving shared challenges, and elevating the development partnership and multidimensional engagement to new heights.

Dr. Jaishankar said:

"A pleasure to meet Nepal's Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane and his delegation today in Delhi. Our discussions focused on the 🇮🇳🇳🇵 development partnership and people-to-people ties. These have a crucial role in promoting growth and prosperity."

Meeting with BJP Leadership at Party Headquarters

The RSP delegation held an important political and diplomatic meeting with BJP's top leadership at the party's central office in New Delhi. Senior leaders present included BJP National President Nitin Nabin, General Secretary Arun Singh, Foreign Affairs Department Head Dr. Vijay Chauthaiwale, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The bilateral discussion advanced the practice of party-to-party diplomacy. The primary objective was to deepen the centuries-old historical, cultural, and people-level ties between the two neighbouring nations while broadening dialogue on democratic values and practices. Strategic experiences were also exchanged on organisational strengthening, grassroots outreach, development-oriented governance, and the leadership role of the new generation in contemporary politics — all of which are expected to elevate mutual understanding between the two parties and reinforce RSP's organisational consolidation and democratic maturity.

BJP National President Nitin Nabin said:

"Under the KNOW BJP initiative, I am delighted to welcome RSP Nepal Chairman Shri Rabi Lamichhane and his delegation at BJP Headquarters and to engage in dialogue with them. Meaningful discussions were held on further strengthening the BJP–RSP party-to-party relationship. They were briefed on BJP's organisational structure from the top leadership level down to the booth level. Questions were also answered regarding membership expansion, candidate selection processes, and BJP's deep connect with grassroots workers. Detailed discussions also took place on how development and public service remain at the core of BJP's governance model under the leadership of Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji."

The BJP officially stated:

"𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐨-𝐍𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬! BJP National President Shri Nitin Nabin warmly hosted Rabi Lamichhane, Chairman of Nepal's Rastriya Swatantra Party, and his delegation at BJP Headquarters in Delhi under the Know BJP initiative. Shri Nitin Nabin apprised them of the BJP's robust organisational structure, membership drives, grassroots connect, and development-focused governance under PM Modi."

Rashtriya Swatantra Party (RSP) said:

"Important talks between RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane and India's Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi have been successfully concluded in New Delhi today. The talks, held with the participation of RSP Co-General Secretary Bipin Kumar Acharya, Secretariat Member Deepak Bohra, Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, featured extensive discussions on the vision of moving Nepal–India relations beyond past limitations toward a new era of 'Development Diplomacy.' The Rastriya Swatantra Party is fully prepared and committed to transforming the shared prosperity, mutual trust, cooperation, and potential of the peoples of both countries into concrete achievements."

Nepal–India Relations: A New Height, A New Depth

Such a grand and cordial visit — at both the governmental and people's level — between Nepal and India had never taken place before. This visit is believed to deepen, elevate, and further strengthen the centuries-old traditional relationship between Nepal and India, adding an entirely new dimension to Nepali diplomacy.

For the first time in Nepal's own history, RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane successfully led the formation of a stable government commanding nearly a two-thirds majority. The honour and respect accorded to him by the Government of India and the BJP leadership — which has held power in India for over two decades — is also a historic moment that holds Nepal's head high.

In terms of area, Nepal is 22.3% smaller than India, and in terms of population, India is 28 times larger than Nepal — yet Nepal and India are equally sovereign nations. India gained independence from British rule in 1947, whereas Nepal has always remained an unconquered land. That is precisely why we never celebrate an Independence Day — because we have been free throughout all of time.

" झुक्दै नझुक्ने नेपाली छोरो" — "I am a Nepali son who shall never, ever bow down."

This timeless song by Gopal Yonjan speaks not of an arrogant people, but of a valiant lineage — we Nepalis, who shall never bow as long as Nepal endures.
