Exclusive: अमेरिकाको न्यू जर्सी राज्यको जर्सी सिटी सहरका मेयर स्टेभन फुलपले जुन ३० तारिख (June 30, 2017) नेपाली झण्डा सिटी हलको नीलो आकाश माथि फहराउँदा अर्थात झण्डोत्तोलन गर्दा नेपाली झण्डा अमेरिकी झण्डा मुनि रहेको प्रसंगलाई विशेष गरी अमेरिकामा रहेका केही नेपालीहरूले यति चर्को स्वरमा विरोध गरे कि मानौं उनीहरूभन्दा राष्ट्रवादी अरू कोही छैन। खोई हामीले आभार व्यक्त गरेको मेयर फुलपलाई ? जसले जर्सी सिटी शहर अमेरिकाको सबैभन्दा विविधतापूर्ण आप्रवासी समुदायहरू रहेको सहर घोषणा गर्दै नेपाल र नेपालीहरूको सम्मान गर्न पाउँदा गर्व लागेको जनाए। जर्सी सिटी सहर नेपालको झण्डा आफ्नो अफिसियल कार्यालय भवनमा फहराउने विश्वमै पहिलो अमेरिकि सहर बनेको कुरामा गर्व गर्नु पर्दैन ?
मैले मेयर फुलपद्वारा नेपाली झण्डा फहराउने समारोहमा स्वागत भाषण गर्दा म लगायत जर्सी सिटीवासी नेपालीहरूको तर्फबाट मनभरीको आभार व्यक्त गरेको थिएँ। समय मिल्यो भने तल पढ्नुहोला।
विबादबारे मेरो प्रतिक्रिया:
1. जर्सीसिटी मेयर अफिसले दिएको झण्डाको साईज 4x6 फिटको हो। सो अनुसार नै नेपालको झण्डा उपलब्ध गराईएको हो।
2. झण्डा फहराउने डण्डामा नेपालको झण्डा ६ फिट लम्बाई (length) तिरबाट छिराईन्छ र ४ फिट चौडाईतिर फहराईन्छ भने अमेरिकाको झण्डा फहराउँदा (hoist) ठीक अर्को (उल्टो) गरी ४ फिट चौडाई (width) तिरबाट डण्डामा छिराईन्छ ६ फिट लम्बाईतिर फहराईन्छ। यसरी फहराउँदा नेपालको विश्वमै एक मात्र त्रिकोणात्मक (triangular) झण्डा विश्वका अन्य सबै देशहरूका चतुर्कोणात्मक (quadrilateral) झण्डाभन्दा फहराईनेतिरको लम्बाईमा सानो देखिन्छ।
3. माथि उल्लेखित साईजको हिसाबले टेक्निकली (प्राविधिक) रूपमा दुईटै झण्डाको साईज बराबर नै हो।
4. जर्सीसिटीमा झण्डा फहराईएकै हो, फोटोसप गरिएको हैन। झण्डा फहराउने समारोहमा उपस्थित झण्डै सयजना नेपालीहरू र अमेरिकी पाहुनाहरूत्यो ऐतिहासिक क्षणको साक्षी छन्।
5. सिटी हल होस् कि सिंह दरबार, ह्वाईट हाउस होस् कि अन्य मुलुकका संसद (पार्लियामेण्ट) भवन, ति सार्वभौम (sovereign) स्थानहरूमा झण्डा फहराउने डण्डा (hoisting shaft) एउटै हुन्छ र जब कसैलाई सम्मान गर्ने अवसर आउँछ त्यहीं डण्डा (shaft) मा अर्को देशको झण्डालाई आयोजक (host) देश या शहरले आफ्नो मुलुकको फहराई रहेको झण्डा रहेको एक मात्र उहींडण्डामै आफ्नो झण्डा लगत्तै (अपमान गर्न र हेप्नलाई होईन) तर अर्को डोरी (halyard) बाट तलबाट तानेर नीलों आकाश माथि पुर्याएर फहराउँदै सम्मान गर्ने प्रचलन विश्वभरी नै छ। यसो गर्नु भनेको नेपाल या अन्य कुनै देशको झण्डाको अपमान हुनै सक्दैन। हेर्नुहोस् अन्य देशहरूको झण्डा फहराउँदाको फोटोहरू।
6. नेपालको झण्डा फहराउने समारोहमा सिटी हल भित्रको मन्चको दाँया (right side) तिर अमेरिकाको झण्डा र बाँया (left side) तिर नेपालको झण्डा समान उचाईको डण्डा (shaft) मा राखिएको थियो। म लगायत सम्पूर्ण वक्ताहरूले दुई झण्डाको बिचमा रहेको डायसमा उभिएर मन्तव्य दिंदै गर्दा र ति दुई झण्डाको सामू अमेरिका र नेपालको राष्ट्रगान गाउँदाको को त्यो क्षण कसको मन गर्वले फुलेन होला?
7. यो समारोह / कार्यक्रम मेयर कार्यालयले झण्डै दुई महिनाको तयारी लगाएर आयोजना गरेको हो। जर्सी सिटी नेपाली समाज (जेसिएनसी) को तर्फबाट सह-आयोजक बनेर काम गरिएको हो।
8. आश्चर्य ! नेपालको नागरिकता परित्याग गरेर अमेरिकी संविधान र झण्डाको अघिल्तिरअमेरिकी सार्वभौमिकताको रक्षाको लागि कसम खाँदै अमेरिकी नागरिक बनेका र बन्दै गरेका अन्धराष्ट्रवादी अमेरिकामा रहेका नेपालीहरूबाटै नेपालको झण्डाको मानसम्मानको बहानामा अमेरिकी झण्डा र अमेरिकी मेयरले गरेको नेपाल र नेपालीको पहिचानर उच्च कदरलाई नजरअन्दाज, घोर विरोध र अपमान गर्ने कार्य हुनु यो भन्दा निन्दनीय र सर्वनाक लज्जाको विषय अरू के हुन सक्छ?
9. कुनै ठाउँमा झण्डा गाड्ने र फहराउने कार्य त्यो स्थान उपर बिजय हाँसिल गर्नु पनि हुन्छ। जस्तो कि सगरमाथाको चुचुरोमा पुगियो भने नेपाल या कुनै पनि देश या संस्थाको झण्डा गाड्ने र फहराउने प्रचलन छ। दुई मुलुक बिच कुनै स्थानका बारे लडाई भयो भने बिजयी मुलुकले उक्त स्थानमा झण्डा गाडेर, फहराएर आफ्नो सार्वभौमिकता कायम गरेको जनाउ दिने र विजयोत्सव मनाउँने ऐतिहासिक परम्परा छ। यस हिसावले हामी गर्व गरौं- जर्सी सिटीको नीलो आकाशमा नेपाली पहिचानरूपी विजय झण्डा फहराउन सफल भएकोमा। म गर्व गर्दछु- जर्सी सिटी निवासी भएकोमा र मेयर फुलप र जर्सी सिटी शहरलाई मुरी मुरी आभार व्यक्त गर्दछु। नेपाल आमाबाट मैले पाउने सबै आशिर्वाद यहाँलाई लागोस् हामी नेपालीको अस्तित्वलाई स्वीकार गरी पहिचान र सम्मान गरेकोमा।
10. सकारात्मक सोंच सार्थक जीवनको सफलताको कडी हो। अन्धराष्ट्रवाद र अतिवाद कुनै पनि मुलुक र समाजको लागि अत्यन्त हानिकारक र अनुत्पादक हुन्छ। दु:ख लाग्यो- नेपाली मित्रहरूको अन्धराष्ट्रवाद रूपी अनुहार देख्नु परेकोमा तर गौरवान्वित र हर्ष विभोर छु- नेपालको झण्डा अमेरिकी भूमिमा फहराएको देख्न पाउँदा । सबैलाई चेतना भया ।

at the Flag Raising for Nepal Ceremony

Good evening and Namaste !
While welcoming our guests as we traditionally call 'Atithi Dewo Bhava' which means 'Guests are equal to God.' I would like to welcome all of you at this historic Flag Raising Day for Nepal. Today, June 30th, 2017 will be remembered generations to come as a day of reckoning of Nepali American community's unique identity in this historic City of Jersey City. Our city becomes the second (first, corrected) U.S. city to host such ceremony after City of Philadelphia. I am exuberantly jubilant today as all of you to witness this cherishing moment.
Every time, when I pass the City Hall that I am proudly standing today, I take a very unique picture of myself to remind me of my root as Nepali immigrant who has crossed several continents and oceans to reach here in the U.S. and, finally, settled in this great city, which warmly says 'Make It Yours'. Yes, I made it and commonly, we made Jersey City our own home. When you go out and on your left, you will see a City Plaque saying 'America's Golden Door'. That's where I take my selfie picture every time I come here. I feel so fortunate to be Jersey City resident, the city which had welcome millions of early immigrants like all of us from outside world who landed to nearby Ellis Island in search of American Dream. Between Ellis Island and Jersey City, a physical bridge connects them from where those immigrants entered into this welcoming city for the first time. Our neighboring sister city, New York sends most of the millions of tourists every year to witness the liberating moment with Statue of Liberty but we have Liberty State Park that sets as background for world famous Lady Liberty whose back is on our side welcoming guests at the entrance with her iconic raised right arm with a flame of freedom. That's why, we fondly call her our Lady Liberty. Today, I would like to welcome all of you with the same spirit of our Lady Liberty. In pursuit of happiness, we also came to this great country, and, this great city has welcome us with open and warm arms. That’s the point- a home away home but we shall not forget our back home- Nepal.
As our city has recognized and celebrated today we as Nepali community and raised the Flag of Nepal, the world's only triangular flag, I am thankful to our charismatic Mayor Steven M. Fulop and his entire staffs of Office of Welcoming Communities and City Council for this enduring honor. As pro-immigrant leader and Iraq War veteran, like my British Gorkhali veteran father who fought World War II, we need Mayor Fulop’s steadfast leadership to safeguard and revamp our neighborhoods and to keep continue as sanctuary city safe for immigrant communities regardless of their status.
I also would like to congratulate to today's distinguished honorees, fellow Nepali friends who have made Jersey City and New Jersey their home.
My sincere gratitude to Consul General of Nepal Government Pushpa Raj Bhattarai for his gracious presence and official statement, our dynamic city leader Councilwoman-at-Large Joyce Watterman for Closing Remarks, Jersey City Diversity & Inclusion Board advisor Dr. Bishnu Maya Pariyar for Opening Remarks.
I also would like to thank all of you, our great performers, dear media friends and last but not least, members of Jersey City Nepali Community (JCNC).
