Jersey City to Hold Candlelight Vigil Saturday for Victims of Nepal’s Devastating Floods

Exclusive: JERSEY CITY, N.J. — Members of New Jersey’s Nepali community, local leaders and well-wishers will gather at Jersey City Hall on Saturday evening for a candlelight vigil honoring the victims of the devastating floods in Nepal and expressing solidarity with bereaved and affected families.

The Candlelight Vigil for Nepal’s Flood Victims will take place on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Jersey City Hall, 280 Grove St., Jersey City, NJ 07306.

Organized under the message “In Solidarity, In Prayer, In Hope,” the gathering will provide an opportunity for community members to remember those who lost their lives and to offer prayers for families and communities struggling with the aftermath of the disaster.

The vigil is being hosted by the Jersey City Nepali Community (JCNC) and is supported by the City of Jersey City and the Women Advisory Board, City of Jersey City.

The event has also received endorsements from NJ Senator Raj Mukharji, Jersey City Mayor James Solomon, Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli, Hudson County Commissioner Yraida Aponte-Lipski, NJ Assemblyman Ravi Bhalla, NJ Assemblywoman Katie Brennan, Jersey City Councilman Tom Zuppa, Jersey City Councilman Rolando Lavarro Jr., and City of Jersey City Councilwoman at Large Mamta Singh.

Organizers said the vigil represents not only a moment of mourning, but also a collective expression of compassion and solidarity from Nepalis living thousands of miles from their homeland.

A broad coalition of Nepali and diaspora organizations is joining the initiative. Co-hosting organizations include NRNA ICC, UNDO International, NRNA NJ, Women for Cause (WFC), New Jersey Nepali Samaj, Friends of ADWAN Nepal, Nepali Diaspora Alliance (NDA), Nepali Jana Samparka Samiti America (NPRCA), UNDO USA, and Prabas Nepali Samparka Samiti America (PNSSA).

The organizers have invited community members, friends, elected officials and well-wishers from across Jersey City and the surrounding region to attend and stand together with Nepal during this period of grief.

Battery-operated candles required

Because the gathering will be held on City Hall premises, organizers emphasized that only electric or battery-operated candles will be permitted. Open-flame candles should not be brought to the vigil.

The program begins at 7:00 p.m. Saturday at Jersey City Hall, 280 Grove Street.
