Exclusive: Sudan (Sudhan) Gurung has emerged as one of the most prominent and widely discussed figures from Nepal’s Gen-Z movement. Rising as the de facto leader of the youth-led uprising, Gurung is widely regarded as the “kingmaker” who played a decisive role in uniting key alternative-politics figures—Rabi Lamichhane, Balendra (Balen) Shah, and Kulman Ghising—under the banner of the National Independent Party (Rastriya Swatantra Party–RSP), positioning it as a formidable alternative political force in Nepal.
Following this historic unification, Kathmandu’s internationally recognized independent mayor, Balendra “Balen” Shah, posted a powerful Facebook status on December 29, stating:
“Everyone says the country must be built, but who actually makes the effort to build it—that is what matters.
The role that Sudhan Gurung ji has played is something this country will not forget even in a hundred years. Love you, brother ❤️”
The post went viral, garnering more than 560,000 likes, 37,000 comments, and 3,800 shares.
Twelve days later, on January 9, Sudan Gurung formally announced that he will contest the upcoming House of Representatives election as an independent candidate from Gorkha–1. With this declaration, Nepal’s political landscape has witnessed renewed momentum, as the founder of Hami Nepal and the Council of Gen-Z officially embarks on his parliamentary journey.

Candidacy Announcement: “The Era of Change Is Here”
Announcing his decision through a Facebook post, Gurung wrote:
“THE START OF A NEW ERA IS HERE
The era of change is no longer coming. It is here.
There is no more waiting. Change is here.
Sudhan Gurung announces his candidacy from Gorkha Constituency No. 1.”
In another post, he further stated:
“I would like to formally announce my candidacy in the upcoming House of Representatives election from Gorkha Constituency No. 1.
The beginning of change from my own village, my own soil.
New power, new faces, new Nepal. 🇳🇵”
Who Is Sudhan Gurung?
Although raised in Chitwan, Sudan Gurung’s ancestral home district is Gorkha. He was born in Chumnubri Rural Municipality, located in northern Gorkha.
A former DJ and event manager, Gurung turned to social activism following the tragic loss of his son during Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake. His dedication to public service deepened further during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when he founded Hami Nepal, a volunteer-based humanitarian organization that made significant nationwide contributions during the crisis.
Under the initiative of Hami Nepal, the Council of Gen-Z was established. Since its inception, Hami Nepal has played a leading role in emergency response and humanitarian work, with volunteer youth networks active across all 77 districts of Nepal.
A strong advocate for youth representation, Sudan (Sudhan) Gurung consistently calls for good governance and the complete eradication of corruption. With his decision to seek a seat in Parliament, he now aims to advance these principles from within the country’s highest policy-making body and serve as a direct catalyst for political transformation.
Best wishes for success in his new political journey.
