Updated: Exclusive: अमेरिकाको वायोमिंग विश्वविद्यालयले आयोजना गरेको खुर हुने जनावरहरू (ungulates) को विश्व सम्मेलनमा नेपालको तर्फबाट आफ्नो कार्यपत्र प्रस्तुत गर्न अमेरिका आएका नेपाली बन्यजन्तु बैज्ञानिक तथा संरक्षणविद कमल थापा मगरसंग न्यू योर्क सहरमा विशेष अन्तरकृया सम्पन्न भएकोछ। मगर संघ अमेरिकाले आयोजना गरेको उक्त कार्यक्रममा संरक्षणविद थापाले नेपालको प्राकृतिक स्रोतमा स्थानीय जनता र आदिवासी जनजातिहरूको सह-अस्तित्वकाबारे चर्चा गर्दै बन्यजन्तु, बनजंगल, जमिन र जलमा स्थानीय जनता र प्रथाजन्य नियमन गरी प्राकृतिक स्रोतहरूको परम्परादेखि संरक्षण गर्दै आएका आदिवासीहरूको अपनत्व नहुँदासम्म सरकारले थोपरेको कानूनका आधारमा मात्र प्राकृतिक स्रोतहरूको संरक्षण नहुने बताए। यसैविच, अमेरिकाको न्यू जर्सी राज्यस्थित जर्सी सिटी सहरको नगर परिषदका प्रेसिडेण्ट जोयस वाटरम्यानले बैज्ञानिक थापाले विगत २५ वर्षदेखि बन्यजन्तु संरक्षणमा नेपालमा अनुसन्धान र अनुगमन गरी विश्वस्तरमा योगदान पुर्याएकोमा जर्सी सिटी नगर परिषदको तर्फबाट सम्मान गरेकिछिन्।
को हुन् संरक्षणविद कमल थापा मगर?
बाग्लुंग जिल्लाको हुग्दिसिरमा जन्मेका संरक्षणविद थापा वर्ल्ड वाईल्डलाईफ फण्ड, राष्ट्रीय नदी संरक्षण कोष, राष्ट्रीय संरक्षण कोषको अन्नपूर्ण संरक्षण क्षेत्र (एक्याप) मा संलग्न भै हिउँ चितुवा (snow leopard), रेड पाण्डा, नाउर, झारललगायत हिमाली बन्यजन्तु र यसको स्थानीय जनताको सह-अस्तित्व सम्वन्धी परियोजना, अध्ययन र अनुसन्धानमा नेपालको हिमाली भेगमै २५ वर्षभन्दा वढी समय बिताएकाछन्। उनले आफ्नो साढे दुई दशक लामो हिमाली खुर हुने जनावरहरू (Himalaya Ungulates) सम्बन्धी अनुसंधानात्मक शोधपत्र लेखहरू विश्वका विभिन्न बन्यजन्तु विज्ञान सम्बन्धी जर्नलहरूमा प्रकाशन गर्दै आएकाछन्।
नेपाली बन्यजन्तु बैज्ञानिक तथा संरक्षणविद कमल थापा मगर यहीं जुलाई ५-८ विच अमेरिकाको वायोमिंग विश्वविद्यालयको जुलोजी तथा फिजियोलोजी डिपार्टमेंटले आयोजना गरेको खुर हुने जनावरहरूको विश्व सम्मेलन (Global Initiative on Ungulate Migration) मा नेपालको तर्फबाट नाउर (blue sheep) र झारल (Himalayan Tahr) सम्वन्धी आफ्नो कार्यपत्र प्रस्तुत गर्न अमेरिका आएका हुन्। उनी जुलाई २० तारिख नेपाल फर्किदैछन्।

यसैविच, जुलाई १३ तारिख मगर संघ अमेरिकाले आयोजना गरेको उक्त अन्तरकृया कार्यक्रम तथा भेटघाट समारोहमा मगर संघ अमेरिका र जर्सी सिटी सहर नगर परिषदद्वारा नेपाली बन्यजन्तु बैज्ञानिक तथा संरक्षणविद कमल थापा मगरलाई सम्मानित गरिएकोछ।
अमेरिकाको न्यू जर्सी राज्यस्थित जर्सी सिटी सहरको नगर परिषदका प्रेसिडेण्ट जोयस वाटरम्यानले बैज्ञानिक थापाले विगत २५ वर्षदेखि बन्यजन्तु संरक्षणमा नेपालमा अनुसन्धान र अनुगमन गरी विश्वस्तरमा योगदान पुर्याएकोमा जर्सी सिटी नगर परिषदको तर्फबाट सम्मान गरेकिछिन्। सो कदरपत्र जर्सी सिटी सहरको मेयरकि महिला वोर्ड सल्लाहकार एवं न्यू जर्सी राज्यको गभर्नरको एसियन अमेरिकन प्यासेफिक आईल्याण्डर कमिसनकि कमिस्नर डा. विष्णुमाया परियारले संरक्षणविद थापा मगरलाई प्रदान गरेकी थिईन्।
त्यसैगरी, मगर संघ अमेरिकाले संरक्षणविद थापा मगरलाई मगर जातिको परम्परागत फेटा लगाएर स्वागत गर्दै मायाको चिनो (Token of Love) प्रदान गरी विशेष सम्मान गरेकोछ।
Introduction of Wildlife Scientist and Conservation expert Mr. Kamal Thapa Magar (PhD Scholar) from Nepal
Nepali Wildlife Scientist and conservation expert Mr. Kamal Thapa Magar has more than 25 years of experience and expertise in the field of biodiversity research and conservation across Nepal Himalayas. Mr. Thapa has dedicated his career in globally reputed research and conservation-based organizations such as World Wildlife Fund, National River Conservation Trust, National Conservation Trust- Annapurna Conservation Area Project, Rural Reconstruction Nepal and Institute of Forestry.
As wildlife scientist, Mr. Thapa is expert on ecology and management of ungulate research and conservation efforts. His presentation of his work on Snow Leopard, Blue Sheep and Himalayan Tahr in Nepal will be critically relevant to discuss and share with global stakeholders.
Mr. Thapa had presented his pioneering work on blue sheep and Himalayan Tahr in Nepal at the inaugural meeting of the Global Initiative on Ungulate Migration which was hosted by Department of Zoology & Physiology at University of Wyoming from July 5th through July 8th, 2023.
Mr. Thapa has extensively travelled throughout the country for his ecology and management of ungulate research conservation efforts including the fringes of the Mt. Kangchenjunga, Mt. Everest, Gaurishankar, Langtang, Annapurna, Dhorpatan, Dolpa plateau of mountains and in Terai region. Mr. Thapa has initiated and led the project tracking snow leopard in Nepal (Satellite GPS color in Mt. Kangchenjunga during 2013 & 2014) i. e. he has involved intensively to scan on tracks, remote trail camera, non-invasive genetic research, satellite GPS telemetry including monitoring demographic structure of trophy species such as blue sheep and Himalayan tahr including red panda. Not limited to this, he also has involved in conducting Greater one horn rhino census in Chitwan National Park.
Mr. Thapa has mentored and supervised more than 100 students, young researchers, national parks staffs and members of community-based organizations on biodiversity monitoring technique and conservation. In doing so, Mr. Thapa with colleagues have more than two dozen manuscripts in the national and international peer-reviewed journals.
Mr. Thapa also teaches ecotourism and wildlife management for master students as a visiting professor at Institute of Forestry, Nepal. Mr. Thapa is PhD Scholar at Institute of Forestry and currently undertakes fieldwork ecology of on snow leopard and mountain ungulates in Nepal Himalayas.
